"Fire" and "Ice"

Images from the RPVV Grade 10 classroom - Discussing "Fire and Ice"

These are images showing students getting ready for group work in class, discussing the emotions and feelings related to the words 'fire and ice' and then the final responses displayed on the classroom board.

Snehlata - Teacher, Grade X RPVV

We've been talking about Robert Frost and his poems in our class. Last year we'd read his poem, The Road Not Taken.
We've been talking about what we already know about Robert Frost and what kind of poems he writes.
Then we read his poem Fire and Ice.
In groups we discussed what emotions and feelings we associate with 'Fire' and 'Ice'. We also talked a little bit about the different worlds we inhabit.
How do these different emotions affect the worlds we inhabit? (They have the power to destroy us, harm us)
The discussions will continue...
We are also asking ourselves the questions - Is this a poem? What makes it a poem?
(Some ideas for these discussions/lessons were taken from the English Teachers Network - ETNI)

The way that people can change their life can come from a very small, insignificant opportunity.  People can see everything differently in the way they look at the world.

Malik Johnston...thoughts on "Fire and Ice"

In the poem "Fire and Ice" by Robert Frost I think that he is trying to say that in the world people will have different opinions as to how the world will end. And from the desire in which he has once experienced, he too agrees that the outcome of the world ending will be in fire. But if the world was to end again, it would then end in ice because it is just as powerful and destructive as fire.

Responds to Fire and Ice

How it going guys its Edwin again, there was this other poem we did in class today called Fire and Ice. I think that this poem is about that no matter what the world will end so what ever happens, happens

Denise Thomas The Dust Of Snow

The poem "The Dust Of Snow" at first i didnt like the poem because i did not understand. When I analyzed the poem i realized that everyone has days where they can be angry. Also any small thing at any moment can change a persons whole mood and make them look at life differently.

Joel Polanco

Fire And Ice by Robert Frost is about how there are two sides to the big stories of how the world would cease to exist. Some believe the world would end in flames, and others believe the world will freeze. The author says "From what I’ve tasted of desire; I hold with those who favour fire." In other words those who have ever desired anything, must know what hate is. Those who hate are said to burn in flames. Also, If she can die twice she would choose a different death, therefor she wouldn't mind leaving this world in ice.

Responds to Dust of Snow

Hey guys its Edwin, I read this poem in class called Dust of Snow. I believe this poem was about the winter and how the season can be a bit depressing. But then some of the dust of snow from a hemlock tree made the narrators day better.

Tanashia Fields Thoughts on '' Fire and ice ''

This poem makes me think about when my time is up on this earth. If it was up to me i rather let the world go in fire because if it was ice it would take to long , as horrible as it seems i would rather just get it over it quick. I agree with the author Robert Frost that i will favour the ones who like fire. This poem is cool , i like it better then "dust of snow" for some reason. This one really made me think about how my thoughts and life relate to what I'm reading .

Rudy Riddicks Response to Dust of Snow

The Dust of Snow was a very nice and touching poem. It happens a lot to me as well. I'll be thinking about something and then another event will happen to switch me out of that trance. Whoever wrote this poem is a very creative and imaginative person. I imagined a lot of different images.

Malik Johnston's thoughts on "Dust of Snow"

I think that this poem is about someone who is upset about something. And his thoughts are side-tracked by a crow that dumps snow on him from a poisonous tree. After that happened, his whole mood changed from gloomy to ecstatic.

Joel Polanco

Dust Of Snow by Robert Frost is a poem about a women who spend her day moody. She walked by hemlock tree and saw a crow that knocked snow off of a poisonous tree. She quickly changed moods and woke up out of this day of misery and sorrow.

Darrin Burgos - The Dust Of Snow

I just read the poem "The Dust Of Snow" and I can relate to the poem when he said that the snow had brightened up his mood. I can relate to this because when I'm upset and I'm a little pouty and something funny happens to me, I get into a much better mood. Its probably because I can actually see this incindent happening to me so I just laugh because its funny.

Tanashia Fields thoughts on " dust of snow" poem .

This poem is so short and simple but has a bigger meaning. It makes me picture a man having a bad day and then then snow falling on him , which he could have found funny or even felt good so it made him happier. Even if that was the only good thing that happened in his day. This has happened to me plenty of times when I had bad days I have at least one thing that I could say took my mind off of whatever was getting me mad at the time.

Greetings from Delhi

Warm greetings from New Delhi!

We are very excited about this project. Reading poetry, exchanging our thoughts about what we are reading and getting to know something about each other as we read.

I am very interested in hearing about what you think about poetry. When you read a poem, what does it make you think? What or how does it make you feel?

Different poems have a different impact on me. Some poems I just don't understand till someone reads them with me and helps me see the meaning of the words and the thoughts and feelings behind them, then they become so beautiful.

Poetry really helps in understanding and appreciating the beauty and power of language to express a thought or feeling/emotion.
